LA: This week in language arts we began talking about Poetry and figurative language. We explored similes, metaphors, and personification through songs. We also started our own personal novel study. Each student chose a novel at their level that interested them and they are reading and keeping summaries and new vocabulary that they find as they are reading. Math: This week we began our work with fractions. We watched a video called "If there were 100 people in the world" and then we talked about the statistics that were represented and how we can show these numbers as fractions. Science: This week in science we began our exploration of aerodynamics and flight. We learned about the 6 properties of air:
Social Studies: This week our class blogger wrote this section of our weekly blog! This week the Students of Room six went back in time to Ancient Greece to learn their government, groups in their society, and everyday life. We were surprised by how far the world has come and how equal we are now rather than in the ancient time’s of Athen’s. We were challenged to pick randomly a part in society and base a character on one of the 3 part in society Slave, Metic and Citizen. We picked Greek names, age, designed them and wrote their backstory. Then later writing a day in the life by writing a journal entry. By; Chloe Ask Me About:

This week students finished their social studies projects and presented them to the class. I was extremely impressed by the research that was done, the quality of the presentations and the creativity used when deciding how to present their information. We also spent a lot of time trying to finish up projects before the break. We are going to start fresh in January with new units to explore so please check in with your child to see what projects they need to complete over the break. These include: - Math: Aquarium project - LA: Newspaper article of their choice - Science: Star log part three (journal of life on new planet. Document found in google docs for reference. I hope you all of a wonderful and relaxing break. School begins again on January 8th! Ask Me About:
- The play - Space art - Multiplication methods (box/area or lines and dots) Look Back: Math: - This week we learned two new methods to help us solve two digit by two digit multiplication equations. They are called the area/box method and the lines and dots method. We also worked on finishing out fish tank math problem Science: - This week students continued to finish their star log projects and then we created an art piece to make the night sky from the middle of our galaxy. Social: - This week students continued to work together to create a visual representation of the cultures they have been researching. Ask me about:
- Rehearsals - Projects Looking back: This week was a busy one! This week we had play rehearsals every afternoon to help us prepare and get ready for the play next week. In the mornings students had time to work on their social projects with their group members. Students finished their research and next week will begin to create a way to represent the culture they started through art. Students also had time to work on their science and math projects that will be due in the up coming weeks before the winter break. On the right side of the blog the dates for projects to be handed in will be posted. Finally, The play is next week on the 13th and 14th. Please note that the performances are only evening ones. If you cannot make an evening performance, you are welcome to come to the dress rehearsal on Tuesday the 12th at 1:00pm. Also, the WE market will be taking place the evening of the play on the 13th and 14th and then again after school on the 18th. Ask Me About:
- Aquarium project - How to multiply a whole number and a decimal - Play rehearsals Looking Back: Language Arts: - The students have been working hard this week on their individual news paper articles. Students have been working on brainstorming and using a template to organize their thoughts before they begin writing. I am impressed by the level of dedication this class has shown towards their assignments and it is present in the quality of their work. All of the students are now able to use paragraphs when writing and they are beginning to understand how to organize the paragraphs in a way that makes sense to their reader. Math: - This week in math we continued on with our aquarium project but we also looked at how to multiply a whole number by a decimal. We looked at this visually first using base tens blocks and 10x10 grids and then we looked at how we can removed the decimal, multiply the numbers, and put the decimal back in at the end. This is a concept we will continue to practice before the Winter Break. Science: - All students have now begun part two of their science project. The majority of this part is due this Wednesday. Please check in with your child to be sure they have been spending some time working on this assignment of the last couple weeks. Their goal is to pick and research 5 things in space that they might encounter on their way to the new planet they are going to. This could be asteroids, stars, planets, nebulae, satellites etc. They need to have an image of the each of the 5 they have chosen and a short 3-5 sentence paragraph explaining what it is. Social - This week students continue to work in their small groups to understand the many cultures that have made Canada what it is. Over the next three weeks students will create a way to represent the culture they are studying, along with some stories of that culture, through various fine art mediums. This could be through sound, painting, choral speech, puppetry and more. Finally, Reminder that the grade 3-6 students are putting on a play called "Aesop's Foibles" The play will be running December 13 and 14th in the evening. Information about tickets can be found on the school website. Ask Me About:
- Aquarium project - Chemistry Thursdays - Decimals to the thousandths place Looking back: Language Arts: This week we continued to work on articles based on the topics of our choice. Each students should be complete their research phase and moving into their planning and introductory paragraphs. Math: - This week we continued to work with decimals and added on a place value. We also began talking about ordering decimals and putting them on a number line. At the end of the week the students were assigned a math project, with a partner or on their own students will design an aquarium for the class. Each group will be working with a hypothetical budget of $240 and will have to keep track of the money they spent, including sales tax. They must not go over budget and must be thoughtful about the type of aquarium and fish they will be putting into it. Science: -Students this week have been working on part 2 of their "To Boldly Go" project where they create a ship log of all of the astronomical anomalies they pass on their way to their new planet. Social: Students are working in small groups to research a culture that makes up the wonderful diversity of Canada. Once students have finished researching they will find a way to artistically share their understanding with all of their 5/6 peers. Finally, Parent math night is this Tuesday from 6-7:30pm. Childcare will be provided. Please RSVP to this link if you will be attending: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSchN1E6m0TQeIco7zj97uJrxx3g1FrhHl5owuu_uMpu4LJZdw/viewform Ask Me About:
- Social Studies project (New) - Science project (New) - Decimal place value - Article Writing (New) Looking Back: Language Arts: - This was a week full of new things! This week in language arts, we talked a lot about the different parts of an article, what makes an article effective, and looking at a few different types. Then, each students conferenced with me and chose a topic they would like to write an article on. Together we set a goal that they would work towards for the next two classes. This involves researching the topic of their choice and using a template to record their findings. The template is used first as a way for students to organize their thinking before they begin to write an article. I have found that many students want to jump right into writing before planning which leads to their writing being confusing and it often misses a logical flow. This happens less when students plan before they begin. Students will have 2 weeks to work on this project, the due date is December 4th. Math: This week in math we used base ten blocks again to help us understand place value of decimal numbers up to the hundredths place. We used the base ten blocks to help us visualize what happens when we add or subtract decimal numbers. Visually understanding what is happening to the numbers in both cases has helped us approach math equations with a bit more confidence. Talking about money with your child will continue to help solidify the idea of decimals moving forward. Science: - This week in science the students had a new project assigned to them entitled "To Boldly Go". This is a three part project based on the premise that we have to leave Earth and go to a new planet. The students must choose why they are leaving Earth, the new planet they are going to, and what life will be like on that new planet. Students must create a time capsule that explains why they are leaving and where they are going (Due November 22), a ship log that documents 5 -8 objects they will pass on their journey, such as planets, stars, nebulae, astroid belts (Due December 6), and they will need to create a star log, or a journal of what life is like on their new planet once they arrive (Due December 20). This project is quite extensive and lots of class time will be given, however, it is important that students use their time wisely. I encourage parents to check in with their child regularly to see how they are progressing on this assignment. Social studies: - We, again, began a new project in social this week. Students chose a culture that contributed to Canada's history that they will research. Students will work in groups to learn about the stories of the culture they have chosen, how it has impacted Canadian history, and then create an artistic representation of that culture. The students can create a visual arts piece, a performance piece, or a combination of the two. This project will be presented the week of December 18th. One final note! We are excited to announce Belfast's first ever #Belfasty Parent Night. On November 28th, we will be hosting a parent only math night where you can come learn some of the ways we are teaching math this year to bring the fun and wonder back to the subject. The event runs from 6-7:30pm and there will be three #Belfasty rotations you will be apart of. In order to keep this a parent only evening we will be supplying childcare in the evening! - Treaty 7 - Remembrance Day Assembly - Decimals Looking Back: Language Arts: - This week in language arts we finished our essays on comparing and contrasting a topic of our choice. We then looked closely at News paper articles so that we could understand the main parts of an article and how to organize one effectively. Math: - This week in math we began to look at decimals using base tens blocks to understand the place value of decimals to the hundredths. We looked at how decimal numbers combine to make whole numbers and convey parts of a whole. We have begun to add and subtract decimals to the hundredths place value. Science: - This week in science we finished our sky science labs and they were a great success! Students demonstrated and shared their knowledge through a hands on activity for their peers. Afterwards, students engaged in a feedback loop that proved to be very helpful and led to students having a better understanding of how their labs impacted their peers. Social Studies: - This week we went to Fort Calgary to learn about Treaty 7. While there we met Elder Randy Bottle from the Blood Tribe. He shared his knowledge about the land, how we can learn from each other, and shared the impacts that treaty 7 had on the First Nations peoples in Alberta. This week students also finished their compare and contrast essays on the two indigenous cultures they had chosen. Words of the week: - Treaty - Remembrance - Headline - By Line - Topic sentence |
