Ask Me About…
Math: This week in math we explored how fractions are connected to music. We learned different notes and how many beats the represent. We then created our own pieces of music using our understanding of the different notes. We used rhythm sticks to create our pieces and then we began to present them. Science: This week in science we began to explore trees from the view of a mouse. We chose one of our trees for our mice to live in and then drew the tree showing where the mouse might live. We will continue to explore trees through the eyes of our mice moving forward and how trees are important to animals in the forest. Language Arts: This week in Language Arts we began to look at figurative language in music. We looked for hyperbole, personification, metaphor and simile. We discussed how in some cases the figurative language being used depends on the context in which it is found. Math: This week in math we explored proper, improper, and mixed fractions. We learned the difference between all of these fractions and how to distinguish them. We created posters with the terms, images, and examples and then had a gallery walk. We looked closely at improper and mixed fractions with the understanding that they are communicating the same information but in different ways. Science: This week in science we continued to build on our visual journal observation drawings of the trees we had chosen. We critically looked at the aspects of each tree that are unique to them such as bark, leaves, cones, and needles. These drawings are due on Wednesday January 18th. Language Arts: This week in Language Arts we discussed mood and tone in poems. We talked about distinguishing between these two and how mood is what we feel when we read and that tone is what the author creates and wants the audience to feel through their writing. We also looked at similes, metaphors, and hyperbole. French: This week we began a mini unit in french on winter clothing. We learned the vocabulary and proper pronunciation for clothing items such as snowsuits, mittens, snow pants, skates, hats and more. Subject Specifics Math: This week in math we began a brand new unit. We are now looking at fractions! This week we explored what fractions are, the vocabulary we use when talking about fractions, and how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominatior. We discussed that fractions are parts of a whole and that all of the parts are equal. We learned that the numerator is the top number in a fraction and represents how many pieces and the denominator is the bottom number and represents how many altogether. Science: This week in science we we started to look at trees and forests. All students chose four different trees that they are going to become experts on. The trees needed to be a mix of coniferous and deciduous and native and cultivated spieces. After the students chose their trees the began to learn about them and then sketch them including an upclose view of their leaves, needles, and cones. Language Arts: This week in Language Arts we finished working on our news paper articles and began poetry by writing an I Am poem about ourselves. We will be presenting these on Monday. PLEASE NOTE: If students have not finished their articles and put them into the class news paper slides on googleslides, this is due Monday.
