Room 6 Update
Date: October 28th, 2016 PLEASE NOTE: Monday is Halloween and there will be many Halloween themed activities. Our class will be having a movie in the afternoon with some activities. We ask that no food is sent in on Monday as there are too many allergies in the class and we want to make sure all of our students have a fun and safe Halloween. Ask Me About…
Math: This week we have continued our work with patterns by identifying cores of patterns and prediction how the patterns will grow. We also continued to work on our turkey problem, this week we tried to figure out how many hours it will take to cook our 24 pound turkey. Social: This week we finished up our regions final projects. It was amazing to see how many creative ways there were to share information on a topic. All of the students took this project to heart and worked to create a unique learning experience for their peers. Language Arts: This week we had two writing assessments. We had our narrative (story telling) and our expository (article writing). We also began our novel study for the year. We will be reading “Walking Home” by Eric Walters. We are looking forward to this novel and already the class is asking excellent questions in regards to refugees and poverty. Other: Our class is currently working together to create a performance piece for our schools Remembrance Day assembly. We have had many wonderful discussions about various deep topics. I am impressed with how thoughtful, curious, and open minded our class is. Fine arts: In fine arts the class has been building soundscapes to go along with a specific story. They are asked by Mr. Symingtion to have all of the props they need to create their soundscapes this week. Mr. Symington is proud of the hard work that they are doing and has expressed how wonderful their rehearsal ethic is. Room 6 Update

Subject Specifics Math: This week we worked on real world problems. We looked at finding the price of potatoes and carrots by the pound. During this we looked at strategies we can use to help us solve the problem. We also looked at the importance of being able to anchor to 10 and to 5 when skip counting and multiplying. We discovered that when a factor is multiplied by ten it is moved up in place value and a zero is attached to hold the place of the ones. Social: This week we finished up our research for the regions of Canada. We received another transmission for Felix (our galactic council mouse who is lost in Canada) giving us some more clues as to where he is. Next week we will be presenting our information that we gathered about the remaining regions of Canada Language Arts: We got centres off the ground this week. We are continuing to look at comprehension strategies and skills. Currently, we are working on recalling information that we have read within the text. We are also continuing to work on our writing skills by practicing different types for writing from information, to persuasive, to narrative. During guided group time, the students are sharing their writing, learning how to give and receive feedback, and how to edit our work. Art: This week each student researched various art styles and then chose one that they would like to learn and improve upon. This year, students will focus on building and developing skills and techniques related to an art style that they are interested in. Each student will develop a portfolio of work that will showcase his or her progress throughout the year. Words of the week:
