Ask Me About…
Math: This week in math we started looking at decimal numbers. We looked at the place value of decimals and then how to add and subtract decimal numbers. Subtraction was a challenging concept and we will be reviewing the concept of borrowing. Reviewing these concepts at home will be very valueable to all students. ***Please note that some students have math homework this weekend. Please check with your student to see if they have the decimal worksheet to finish for Monday. Science: This week in science we continued to work on our science questions. We also looked at the inquiry cycle and how this cycle can guide our research process. https://atruenorthmsteacherblog.wordpress.com/2010/08/28/kath-murdochs-cycle-of-inquiry/
Language Arts: This week in language arts we began an intensive look at article and informational writing. We took the same prompt that we had for our expository writing prompt in October. We then rewrote the article together as a class talking about why brainstorming, structure, and language are important. We discussed why paragraphs are important and how they are used to organize information in a way that is easy for the reader to understand. We also talked about how important it is to brainstorm our ideas before we start so that we don't forget part way through where we wanted to go. After we wrote the article as a class, each student was asked to go back and rewrite the article themselves including the elements we discussed. A way you can support this work at home is to read articles and informational texts together and talk about the structure and the language that is used in these texts and how it is different from a story. A website that is beneficial for this work is dogonews.com. This website has current events articles in kid friendly language. We talked about things that we wonder about weather or things we would like to discover. We then all took on a big thinking question for this unit. Each student is going to become an expert on their question and teach their peers all about their topic. The questions that we are looking at are:

We also had a math gallery and forum to explain the strategies that different students used to answer the Turkey time problem. The students learned to give constructive and positive feedback and were able to improve their posters. Social/ Language Arts: This week we combined language arts and social studies as we explored social justice issues around the world. We have connected these issues to our novel study Walking Home. We watched a documentary this week called Living on One Dollar, which brought up issues of economic poverty, clean water sources, educational poverty, health care etc. We are looking to understand these issues and how we can help others. Fine Arts: The students have been working on their soundscapes in Fine Arts. The due date for this project is Thursday November 17. Words of the week:
