Math: - We have broken all of the 5/6 classes into smaller math groups to address specific needs for each student. Please check in with your child to see what they have been learning in math. Science: - This week in science we practiced analyzing fingerprints by taking the fingerprints of a buddy class and teaching them about the types of patterns found in the prints. We did a quiz game to solidify our understanding of the fingerprint types. Language Arts: - This week in Language Arts we have been focusing on reading comprehension. We started the week by each picking an article and then sharing what we read and understood with a partner. We also read an opinion based article on self-driving cars and then had a full group discussion about it. During this discussion we practiced voicing our opinions in a thoughtful way and turn taking. We also have been working on our understanding of other perspectives and how they can impact our own perspective Social Studies: - This week in social studies we began to research and understand different forms of government around the world. Students are working in groups, partners or solo to research two different countries and their styles of government. The students will then be creating a presentation and sharing with the class how these government systems are similar and different. Math: - For the past couple weeks we have broken all of the 5/6 classes into smaller math groups to address specific needs for each student. Please check in with your child to see what they have been learning in math. Science: - This week in science we began a new unit, Evidence and Investigation. We started this unit off by analyzing our fingerprints and how they are different from everyone else. We looked at some of the distinguishing patterns that can be found in finger prints and learned how to look for some of these features in our own fingerprints. We then took our own fingerprints and recorded the type of pattern each print had. Language Arts: - This week in Language Arts we have been focusing on reading comprehension. We started the week by each picking an article and then sharing what we read and understood with a partner. We also included class discussion about articles to be sure that what we are reading, we are also understanding. We then briefly looked at poetry and understanding the figurative language and literary devices that are used within this form of writing. In preparation for the next PAT I encourage parents to increase reading time and follow it up with a discussion about what your child has read. We learned about elements of flight through creating gliders, parachutes and helicopters. We also learned about how planes changed and improved over the last 100 years. Language Arts: - We had our final writing groups for the year in preparation for the PATs and writing assessments. We looked at how to start a piece of writing successfully. Social Studies: - This week in social studies we looked up our political leaders contact information. We looked up the Prime Minister, our Members of Parliament, our Premier, our Members of Legislative Assembly, our Mayors, and our Alderman. Please check in with your child to see what they have been learning in math. Science: - This week in science we began to learn about electricity through different options. The students were able to choose between 4 options and they will be exploring magnetism and electricity through the different forms. Ask your child what option they chose. Language Arts: - We had our final presentations for our novel study Walking Home this week and they were done very well. We have continued to work in our writing groups to target specific needs that our students have in all of the grade 5 and 6 classes. Each group has been practicing story writing and article writing in preparation for PATs and writing assessments next week. Social Studies: - This week in social studies we began to look specifically at what the Federal government does for our country. We have begun looking at all of the different layers within the federal government itself. Next week we will be looking more in depth at Provincial and Local layers of government.
